I have been a one pack a day smoker for nearly 13 years. It came to a point in my life where I absolutely had to quit smoking, so I took every tip, trick, or advice that I could come across. Here I will discuss 12 tricks for how to stop smoking for good.
How to Quit Smoking?
Step 1- Set a date
This is an extremely important first step. Look at your calender, pick a date that best fits you to stop smoking, and keep it. Some find it easier to pick a date that they know they will be home for a few days.
Step 2- Hold yourself accountable
This step coincides with the first. As soon as you have your date set, tell people. Tell everyone important to you, and then some. In doing this you are less likely to have a failed attempt at quitting. If nobody knows you are quitting, nobody can know you failed.
Step 3- Call up the doctor
Okay, you have your date and you have told everybody that matters to you. Now it’s time to prepare. With preparing, many opt to call their family doctor and make an appointment. Let them know that you are quitting and give them your date. Quit smoking products, such as nicotine patches, can be very useful. Stop smoking hypnosis is also an option.
Step 4- Go shopping
I know this sounds silly, but it’s true. Many people say they gain weight after stopping smoking due to the constant need to be doing something with their mouth. So, stock the fridge with healthy snacks! Stock up on a few bags of your favorite mints. They’re an easy thing to pop in your mouth during a craving.
Step 5- Quit!
The date has come, and you’re completely prepared. You have your patches, the fridge is stocked and the cigarettes are no where to be found. Now it’s time to take it one hour at a time. The following steps will include tips on fighting the urge. It has been said that the first 3-4 days are the hardest.
Step 6- Distance yourself
For the first days/weeks distance yourself from other smokers. Try and spend time with nonsmokers, or ask those close to you that smoke to take it outside.
Step 7- Keep the mints, computer and phone handy
With each craving, pop a mint. The first few days they may come as soon as every ten minutes. Join online support groups and talk with others going through the same thing. Pick up the phone and call a close friend.
Step 8- Deep breathing
Smokers are used to inhaling multiple times a day. During an intense craving, take a deep breath, hold it, then release. This trick got me through many cravings.
Step 9- Avoid alcohol
Alcohol tends to make smokers smoke even more. Avoid alcohol until you feel you have beat your addiction.
Step 10- Learn stress coping techniques
Many people smoke more during stressful times. Stress coping techniques such as going for a walk or reading a book can ease the smoking urge during a time of high stress.
Each day without smoking is a new victory! Take a look at the quit smoking timeline available online. You’d be amazed at how your body reacts in such positive ways after only quitting for the first 20 minutes. Be sure to celebrate with those you care about.
Step 12- Save money
Put the money otherwise used on cigarettes in an envelope just for you. Do this for just a couple months, then go pamper yourself! You’ll be surprised at the rate that money piles up.
It’s no secret, quitting smoking is not easy. But is it impossible? No, it’s not. Be serious about your decision to quit, follow these tips, and you are guaranteed success. You are the only one in your way of quitting.
